VILLA STGILAT

BUILDING PROCESS
The design, development and building process took place over several years and was completed in 2018.
To overcome the challenges that this interpretation of parametric architecture brought along the close collaboration between the architect and the master builder Manel Jaen was essential to find solutions to combine old and new technologies.
Since the beginning, the Project always aimed at pushing the possibilities of construction in the 21st century to its very limits.
CERAMICS
To honor the “Volta Catalana” and its heritage, Villa Stgilat uses ceramics by famed Catalan pottery institution Céramic Cumella. The exterior ceramics are highlighting the form of the parametric designed roof. On the inside the ceramics serve not only a decorative but also a functional purpose. The tiles were especially developed for this project to absorb soundwaves to eradicate echoes from the high ceilings, which are almost five meters at its peak. The tiles characteristic stripes and the arrangement of the ceramics give the observing eye an impressive view of the convex and concave ceiling.

TECHNOLOGY
With the implementation of an all around Smarthome system by Loxone the house can be programmed to assist you in your everyday life as well as having remote access through your handheld device to all the essential features. The system allows for maximizing the efficiency of the house, even while away.
ENVIROMENT
The objective was not only to push the technological limits but further create a environmentally responsible house. This shows in the design, by placing the main structures on pillars to reduce the footprint on the landscape as well as integrating existing plants and trees into the design instead of removing and destroying them completely. Furthermore does the roof channel rainwater into an underground water tank that is used to watering the plants during dry stretches. But not only is Villa Stgilat designed to be ecological. The combination of insulation, strategical shaping and placing of the windows in regards to direct sunlight and the installation of efficient heating and cooling systems results in a eco-friendly house that is rated with the highest rank by the official Catalan Institute of Energy.
